Rwabicuma Sector, Nyanza District
“We used to walk long distances sometimes one or even two hours to fetch water from a dirty swamp. If there were many people ahead of us, the wait would take even longer. The water made us sick, and we couldn’t wash, cook properly, or bathe. Our children often missed school or arrived late because we couldn’t get water in time. But today, thanks to the clean water system, we only walk five minutes. Our children are healthy and on time for school, we have water for drinking, cooking, washing, and even for our gardens. Life has changed completely, and we are so grateful to Dufatanye and their partners.” Mukeshimana Jeanne, 36years old with 3 children

This transformation is part of the Village of Hope Project, implemented by Dufatanye Organization with its partners. The project has brought clean and accessible water to families like Jeanne’s and provided them with the tools and training to thrive. Every household received a kitchen garden to improve nutrition, along with small livestock, modern crop varieties, and training in sustainable, climate-smart agriculture.
Beyond agriculture, beneficiaries were empowered through savings and loan groups, entrepreneurship trainings, conflict resolution skills, gender awareness, financial literacy, and reproductive health education fostering dignity, knowledge, and opportunity in 300 vulnerable communities in Rwabicuma Sector.
This comprehensive approach reflects the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to the eradication of poverty and hunger, promotion of good health and quality education, achievement of gender equality, access to clean water and sanitation, creation of decent work opportunities, and action against climate change. It is a clear example of how strong community partnerships can build resilience, restore hope, and create lasting impact.
