On August 29, 2025, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) team, in collaboration with the Nyanza District Health and Sanitation Departments, officially launched the Improved Pit Latrines Reconstruction Program at Akanyenyeri-Cyegera ECD. This initiative is designed to strengthen hygiene and sanitation standards across eight ECD centers currently lacking adequate facilities, with implementation carried out through community work in different villages.

The program’s kickoff took place in Nyamure Cell, where community members joined forces with local leaders and officials. Participants included the Muyira Executive Secretary, security organs, cell and village leaders, all of whom actively engaged in hands-on activities such as fetching water, carrying construction blocks, and digging foundations for the new latrines.

During the closing remarks, the Sector Leader expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed, while also urging continued accountability in both education and community health initiatives, particularly the Mutuelle de Santé. The Leader further highlighted the importance of aligning local efforts with the broader vision of the President of Rwanda.

Additionally, Carine, representing the Dufatanye Organization, after discussing the importance of breastfeeding, emphasized the critical role of child nutrition in the success of ECD centers. She reminded participants that quality education begins with healthy, well-nourished children.

To ensure children remained energized and included throughout the activities, Dufatanye Organization provided porridge and eggs, reinforcing the program’s holistic approach that combines nutrition, health, and education.

Through this initiative, seven improved sanitation facilities will be constructed in Muyira Sector, directly benefiting 105 children by providing them with safe, hygienic, and child-friendly latrines. The community-led construction will continue next Tuesday, with completion expected soon. Once finalized, these facilities will significantly improve sanitation standards in the targeted ECD centers, contributing to a safer and healthier learning environment for young children.
