In Nyamagana Cell, what stands today as a nationally recognized Early Childhood Development Center once began as a simple dream shared by a committed community.

Before the construction of the current center, young children attended early learning sessions in a small room inside a community member’s house. The space was offered with generosity and love, but it was not enough to fully support quality early childhood development. The room was overcrowded, learning materials were limited, sanitation facilities were inadequate, and children had little space to play, move freely, or explore their creativity.
For young children, the early years are the foundation of lifelong learning, confidence, health, and social development. They need safe, stimulating, and child-friendly spaces where they can learn through play, interact with others, and grow in dignity. The previous environment could not fully provide this.

But the people of Nyamagana did not give up.
Parents, caregivers, local leaders, community members, and Dufatanye Organization came together around one shared belief: every child deserves a safe and nurturing place to learn, play, and grow.
Through strong collaboration between Dufatanye Organization and the community, the dream of building a dedicated Early Childhood Development Center began to take shape. Community members contributed their time, labour, local resources, and commitment. Step by step, brick by brick, an empty space was transformed into a welcoming home for children.

Today, Utunyange Home Based ECD Center is filled with learning, laughter, and hope.
Children now have access to a safer and more child-friendly environment designed to support their well-being and development. They have space to play, discover, express themselves, interact with others, and build the confidence they need for the future.
The center has become more than a building. It is a symbol of dignity, opportunity, community ownership, and hope for the next generation.
Over time, the center’s commitment to quality early childhood services, proper organization, child well-being, and community participation gained attention beyond Nyamagana. This journey has now reached an important milestone: Utunyange Home Based ECD Center has received national recognition as one of Rwanda’s outstanding Early Childhood Development Centers.
This achievement belongs to everyone who believed in the vision from the beginning: the children, parents, caregivers, community members, local leaders, and partners who worked together to make the center what it is today.
Dufatanye Organization is proud to have walked alongside the Nyamagana community in this journey. The recognition reflects one powerful lesson: sustainable change happens when communities are empowered, when partnerships are built on trust, and when children are placed at the heart of development.
Dembe Umar, the ECD Coordinator, described the award as a powerful reminder of what collective action can achieve:
“This award is a reminder that when communities come together around the well-being of children, extraordinary things happen. We built this center from the ground up, and today it stands as a symbol of hope, collaboration, and excellence.”

For Niyonsaba Donathile, an ECD caregiver, the true meaning of the award is seen every morning in the faces of the children:
“Every morning, I see children walk through these doors with joy and curiosity. This award belongs to every child and every person who believed that they deserve a safe place to learn and grow.”
While this national recognition is a moment of celebration, it is also a motivation to keep going. Dufatanye Organization and the Nyamagana community remain committed to strengthening early childhood services, improving child well-being, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

The story of Utunyange Home Based ECD Center proves that transformation does not always begin with big resources. Sometimes, it begins with a shared dream, committed people, and a community that refuses to leave its children behind.
From learning in a small room inside someone’s house to becoming a nationally recognized Early Childhood Development Center, Nyamagana’s journey is a story of hope, resilience, partnership, and possibility.
Together, the community and Dufatanye Organization built more than a center. They built opportunity, dignity, and a stronger foundation for the future of Rwanda’s children.
